North Pines Middle School Replacement

Central Valley School District - Spokane Valley, WA

This project involves the replacement of the existing North Pines Middle School with a new 84,600 sf building, removal of the existing 105,000 sf school, removal of the nearby Broadway Apartments and reconfiguration of the site to meet parking, vehicular movement and outdoor field needs.

The design of the new school reflects the values of the District as well as the character of the neighborhood. The use of CMU, siding that has the character of wood, metal and glass provide a timeless character and emphasize its importance as a civic and public building for the community.

The site is re-organized to improve student safety by providing separation between bus and parent drop-off areas. Parent Drop Off and Visitor Parking will accessed from north and located near the main building entry facing west. Fire access will be combined along with pedestrian pathways to the building. An Outdoor Commons is located adjacent to the Student Commons and includes basketball hoops, seating and views of the surrounding context and playfields.

Classrooms are organized so all rooms have direct views to the exterior, providing daylighting. Doors are strategically placed within the corridor system to allow classroom areas to be secured for after-hours functions. The administration area is located adjacent to the main entry and is configured to provide optimum site visibility and security at the entry.
