Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories Headquarters

Pullman, WA

The Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Inc. (SEL) World Headquarters in Pullman is a 90,000 SF structure that has become the new “front door” for their global business. The building houses several divisions of the company with a concrete tilt-up and glass exterior.

Early on in the process, the longevity of the building was stated as being very critical. Subsequently, the choice of material was crucial for the success of the project. The concrete mixture that was chosen helps moderate a wide range of temperature swings, which are prevalent in the Pullman location, ultimately allowing for significant energy savings over the life of the building. Most importantly, the mixture will help reduce future maintenance and the need for reconstruction, making this building a great long-term investment.

The maximum amount of useable space was also created by choosing this design. The building is without a lot of columns and divider walls that clutter most offices. Using concrete material for post-tensioned decks and the precast tilt-up structure, the design creates a wide open, workable and functional space that meets the needs of an expanding business.
