TYLER'S STORY: MY SUMMER INTERNSHIP AT ALSC ARCHITECTS
This has probably been one of the best summers I’ve had my whole life. Not only did I get an amazing experience at my first internship, I also got to meet and work alongside some of the most talented people I’ve met. Walking into ALSC on my first day was honestly terrifying. I didn’t know what to expect. But I immediately noticed one thing that I was dying to be a part of. Everyone seemed to have a place in the office. There were neither “loners” nor feuds among co-workers. Everyone seemed to come together to create what we all love – architecture. After my first day I remember calling my mom and telling her how excited I was to be able to be a part of this team.
Throughout my summer, I got to work on a variety of projects from huge fitness centers like the Yakima Family YMCA to small cabins to multi-building apartments. I never knew how much actually goes into a project, no matter the size. In school, we only get a prompt and then a few months later we’re done. I remember thinking last year, “Is this really what architecture is? You slave away for a few months then move on?” I wasn’t sure that’s what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. But ALSC showed me otherwise. There’s so much more to a project than just a prompt and a turn-in. There’s a bunch of phases it has to go through, there are all sorts of clients to work with, and there are so many problems to solve. Because of ALSC and the projects I was allowed to work on, I know that I’m in the right profession.
I would just like to say thank you to ALSC. Thank you for giving me the experience of a lifetime. Thank you for showing me that architecture is what I really want to pursue. Thank you for teaching me more than I ever thought I’d learn. Thank you for taking a chance on me. And thank you for letting me help bring our clients’ stories to life.
